To mend each tattered Faith — Magnetic Field

To mend each tattered Faith 1
There is a needle fair
Though no appearance indicate-
'Tis threaded in the Air-

And though it do not wear 5
As if it never Tore
'Tis very comfortable indeed
And spacious as before-
(F.1468/J.1442)
[1] Faith:: the trust, of the magnetic field.
[2] needle:: needle of a compass.
[3, 4] no appearance, threaded, Air:: the magnetic field as invisible lines in the air.
[5, 6] not wear, never Tore:: nature of the field.
[7, 8] comfortable, spacious:: people cannot feel the field.

The earth is a great magnet. The instrument-room, where experiments are tried, is a magnetic field. The dipping-needle is an instrument by which the direction of the lines of force is found. ─ Report of the 33rd Meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (1864)
