(F.1485/J.1432)
[1] temerity:: boldness, the growing of wild plants.
[2] Calvary:: Calvary clover, a fast growing plant (with rashness and temerity); its red spotted leaf was said to be the drops of blood from Jesus.
[3] Gethsemane:: the garden of Gethsemane in Mount of Olives, Jerusalem. Gay:: Calvary clovers growing happily in the garden of Gethsemane.
[4] Knew we:: we knew the Calvary clover was from Jesus' blood.

The garden of Gethsemane, and in the distance the Hill of Galilee, and the Mount of Olives. ─ Walks in Canaan By John Ashworth (1869).

Tradition has given to other flowers a connection with our Saviour's sufferings. One kind of orchis, found in Cheshire, is called the Gethsemane orchis, because it is said to have grown at the foot of the Cross, and to have received some drops of blood upon its leaves. The Calvary clover carries the same red mark, and its strange seed-case is fashioned like a crown of thorns. ─ Magazine for the Young (1867)
