We thirst at first 'tis Nature's Act — Deluge

We thirst at first-'tis Nature's Act-1
And later-when we die-
A little Water supplicate-
Of fingers going by-

It intimates the finer want-5
Whose adequate supply
Is that Great Water in the West-
Termed Immortality-

[1] thirst:: to crave, desire. "And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually" (Genesis 6:5).
[2] die:: to desire extremely.
[3] a little Water:: a little sweat, without hard work.
[4] fingers going by:: meddling the desired object.
[5] finer want:: from smaller to greater sin.
[7] Great Water:: "And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die" (Genesis 6:17). the West:: the western world.
