We do not play on Graves — Grave-Digger

We do not play on Graves-1
Because there isn't Room-
Besides-it isn't even-it slants
And People come-

And put a Flower on it-5
And hang their faces so-
We're fearing that their Hearts will drop-
And crush our pretty play-

And so we move as far 9
As Enemies-away-
Just looking round to see how far
It is-Occasionally-
(F.599/J.467)
[1] We:: grave-diggers, badgers. Graves:: a hint on grave-diggers; it can mean burying beetles or badgers.

[8, 9] pretty play, move as far:: a description close to badgers.
[11, 12] looking round, Occasionally:: a description close to badgers.

An animal of the badger tribe was brought for our inspection. It is a native of the lower range of hills; and is called by our people the grave-digger, from its habit of burrowing into places where corpses are interred, in order to feed on them. An uglier animal I have never seen. ─ The Private Journal of The Marquess of Hastings (1858)
