A great Hope fell — Dementia

A great Hope fell 1
You heard no noise
The Ruin was within
Oh cunning wreck that told no tale
And let no Witness in

The mind was built for mighty Freight 6
For dread occasion planned
How often foundering at Sea
Ostensibly, on Land
(F.1187/J.1123)
[1–5] Ruin, within:: A description of losing certain function silently from inside.
[6] mind, Freight:: the function of the brain was damaged.
[9, 10] Sea, Land:: a symptom of dementia.

The disease may therefore be placed under the head of Monomania, acute and chronic Mania, and finally Dementia. Had the term "Amentia" been in use, it might be much more appropriately applied to this stage of complete dementia than in the sense in which it has been heretofore used, for at this final stage the patient's intellect is to all intents annihilated. ─ Army Medical Department Statistical Sanitary, and Medical Reports (1864)
