The shining Courtiers go-
Veiling the purple, and the plumes-
Veiling the ermine so.

Smiling, as they request an alms-5
At some imposing door!
Smiling when we walk barefoot
Upon their golden floor!

[2] Courtiers:: those who solicit favor who seek "the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven" (Revelation 21:2).
[5, 6] request, door:: gate of heaven.
[7] we, barefoot:: noble and common are equal there.
[8] golden floor:: "the street of the city was pure gold," (Revelation 21:21).
