A little Madness in the Spring — King Lear's Fool

A little Madness in the Spring
Is wholesome even for the King,
But God be with the Clown-
Who ponders this tremendous scene-
This whole Experiment of Green-
As if it were his own!

[1] Madness:: King Lear's madness in the play. the Spring:: the young growth, offspring of Lear, his three daughters.
[2] even:: fair; Lear divided his kingdom only to two daughters, nothing to the youngest, which is a little madness for the king.
[3, 4] God, Clown, scene:: the fool who saw clearly Lear's wrong, as if God be with the fool.
[5] Green:: immaturity, indicating the king who is fooled easily by his daughters. Experiment:: a test for the love of king's three daughters, as in the beginning of the play they said how they loved their father.
[6] his own:: the fool's own; the fool stayed with Lear and died.
